Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses

The local SEO basics that help nearby customers find you in Google Maps and "near me" searches, in the order we usually work through them.

What local SEO is

Local SEO helps a business appear when people search for something nearby, such as "plumber near me" or "bakery in Gulberg". Google's local results weigh relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change your distance from the searcher, but you can improve the other two.

1. Google Business Profile

  • Claim and verify your profile
  • Choose the most accurate primary category, and relevant secondary ones
  • Add hours, services, products, photos and a short description
  • Use the same business name you use everywhere else, without extra keywords
  • Post updates and answer questions regularly

2. Consistent business details

Your name, address and phone number (often called NAP) should match exactly on your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Small differences, such as an old phone number or a different abbreviation, make it harder for search engines to be sure they are looking at the same business.

3. Your website

  • A clear page for each main service
  • Location or service-area pages for the places you serve, each with genuinely local detail
  • Your address and phone number in the footer, with a click-to-call link
  • LocalBusiness structured data that matches your profile
  • Fast, mobile-friendly pages

4. Reviews

Ask real customers for reviews, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to reviews, including critical ones, politely and promptly. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them: it breaks Google's policies and puts your profile at risk.

5. Measure and repeat

Track calls, direction requests and website visits in your profile's performance reports, and inquiries from your site in analytics. Review them monthly and adjust. Consistent details also help AI assistants describe your business accurately, which is where GEO picks up.
